Exploration criteria at the Kahang Cu-Mo porphyry deposit, Esfahan province

Abstract

In this research, satellite images, geological maps, as well as geochemical and magnetic data were processed to identify exploration criteria for the Kahang porphyry Cu-Mo deposit located in the middle section of the Urumiyeh-Dokhtar magmatic arc (UDMA). In this deposit, near-surface mineralization is related to altered and brecciated dykes, and deeper than 200 m is associated with altered and brecciated quartz monzonite porphyry showing calk alkaline characteristics. Extensive hydrothermal alteration, from center to the margin of the Kahang deposit, are phllic, argillic and propylitic alterations. Mineralization is mostly related to phyllic and potassic alterations. This deposit was initially identified by processing satellite imagery data by mapping hydrothermal alterations and iron oxides. Additive index maps of the area showed a Cu-Mo enrichment in central part of the hydrothermal alteration and a Pb-Zn depletion in the margin. Processed magnetic data revealed a low magnetic anomaly associated with phyllic alteration. By comparing low magnetic anomaly, high Cu-Mo additive index anomaly, alteration zonation, brecciated rock units and favorable structures, successful preliminary drilling locations can be identified. This research showed that the middle section of the UDMA can have high hidden Cu-Mo mineralized potential such as Kahang, in which the proposed exploration criteria for Kahang deposit can be used to identify similar hidden porphyry mineralization elsewhere.
